Consciousness
Also: awareness
Not something your brain produces — the stuff everything else is made from. And not merely awareness: awareness that chooses.
Almost every model you have met puts matter first and treats consciousness as something the brain manages to produce. My Big TOE inverts that. Consciousness is the fundamental thing; matter is derived from it. The whole model rests on two assumptions and nothing else: that consciousness exists, and that it evolves.
The definition is narrower than the everyday word. My Big TOE defines consciousness as a purposeful awareness that makes intentional choices, and says that choice-making is exactly what separates consciousness from mere awareness. A thermostat is aware of the temperature. It is not conscious, because nothing in it chooses.
This matters for practice more than it looks. If choosing is what consciousness is, then your choices are not something you do with your consciousness. They are what your consciousness is made of.
Where this gets misread
That this is a mystical claim about energy or a universal field. Campbell's framing is aggressively mundane: an information system with input, memory, processing, free will and purpose. He also calls consciousness digital, and then immediately says the ones and zeros are a metaphor — digital means discrete, not literally binary.
